With an attitude like the one Pansy has, her struggles are sure to be dealt with. I appreciate her transparency about her frustration and how she took it to Jesus. Struggles are frustrating and tiresome, and who can we cry out to if we can’t cry out to Him? Thank you, Pansy, for “helping me down the road.”

Randy Welch

Randy Welch was used to being in control. As chief information officer for the city of Garland, Texas, he was responsible for all the computer telecommunications and the staff that helped support them. The first time he missed work for heart issues was to repair a heart valve that wasn’t functioning properly; he wasn’t off the job long. The second time, well, Randy didn’t have any control over that!

In March 1999, two years after he had his heart valve repaired, Randy started having problems with shortness of breath and stamina. He couldn’t walk from the parking lot to his office without having to stop and sit down a couple of times. That’s when he decided to see the cardiologist. She subjected him to a variety of tests and procedures but waited until his last visit to do the treadmill test. The longest Randy could stay on the treadmill was about a minute. That’s when she told him they wanted to put him in the hospital and run even more tests.

The cardiologist was always straightforward with Randy. She said, “You know, I’m not sure, but you may need a heart transplant.” Randy thought, Yeah, right. He checked into the cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) at the hospital on Monday morning, and the testing began. On Thursday they told Randy all the tests indicated that he needed a transplant, and they called the family together to tell them what to expect.

Before Randy could be put on the transplant list, a committee at the hospital had to review his test results and consider his case for approval. They met on Friday morning, after the transplant team had completed their tests. Based on the team’s recommendation, the committee approved the transplant and sent an authorization request to his insurance company about noon. By three o’clock that afternoon the insurance company sent their approval and Randy was added to the heart transplant waiting list.

That is a miracle. Anyone who has ever traversed the bureaucratic red tape of a transplant board and getting the go-ahead for a transplant from an insurance company knows that just doesn’t happen. But that wasn’t much of a miracle compared to what happened next! At 6:00 p.
